Abstract

For some years, environmental pollution, due to greenhouse gases, has been a matter of constant concern for society, which has been becoming aware of the risks that this issue entails for the life of living beings on the planet. The objective of this work was to determine the concentrations of carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide and sulfur dioxide in points of higher vehicular density in the city of Esmeraldas, Ecuador. For the measurement of gases, 3 points in the city were chosen: Ave. Cristóbal Colon “open air sector; Ave. Jaime Hurtado (CODESA sector) and Ave. Simón Bolívar (city center). Measurements were made with specific Drager colorimetric tubes for the measurement of each of these three gases of interest. As a result, it was obtained that the concentrations, of the gases determined, were in no case above the permissible limit, with carbon monoxide being the gas found in the highest concentrations in the 3 points evaluated. As a conclusion, we can say that the levels of environmental pollution were evaluated, in 3 points of the city of Esmeraldas, produced by carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide and sulfur dioxide gases mainly emanated by the circulation of vehicles.
